The short answer: A cotton saree is the most practical drape an Indian woman can own — breathable enough for a working day in peak summer, and, in the right weave and border, smart enough for a pooja or a family function. The trick is matching the weave to the occasion: mul and kota for heat, cotton-silk blends when you need the saree to look dressed.
Why cotton is still the default
Every other fabric asks something of you. Silk asks for careful storage, georgette asks for a petticoat that will not show, synthetics ask you to sit still in the heat. Cotton asks for very little. It lets air through, it takes a pleat, and it forgives a long day.
That is why a cotton saree remains the working woman's saree across most of India — the one that gets worn to the office, to the temple, to a colleague's farewell, and then again next week.
Mul cotton: the lightest everyday option
Mul is a fine, soft cotton with an almost cloud-like handle. It is the weave to reach for between April and the first rains, when anything heavier becomes a negotiation. It creases — that is honest to the fabric, not a fault — but it also relaxes out with a cool iron in minutes. We wrote about this in more detail in our guide to mul cotton sarees.
Kota: open weave, real airflow
Kota's square grid is visible to the naked eye, and that openness is exactly what makes it the coolest thing to wear through an Indian summer. A kota saree with a zari border walks the line neatly — light enough for a day function, finished enough that nobody reads it as casual.
Cotton-silk blends: when it needs to look festive
Pure cotton has a matte finish, which is comfortable but not always celebratory. A cotton-silk blend keeps most of the breathability and adds a low sheen, so the saree photographs as dressed rather than plain. This is the practical middle ground for a mehendi, a housewarming or a daytime wedding function where you will be on your feet for hours.
Choosing by occasion, not by colour
Most people choose a saree by shade first. With cotton it pays to reverse that. Decide how long you will be wearing it and how warm the room will be, pick the weave that suits those hours, and only then choose the colour. A gorgeous saree you are desperate to take off by four o'clock is not a good buy.
If you are shopping across seasons rather than for one event, our guide on which saree fabric suits every season lays out the same logic across all fabrics.
Keeping a cotton saree crisp
Wash the first time gently and separately — cotton dyes, especially deep reds and indigos, can run on their first wash. Dry in shade rather than direct sun, which fades colour faster than anything else. Store folded rather than on a hanger, and refold along a different line every few months so permanent creases do not set into one place.
Starch is a matter of taste. A light starch gives the crisp, structured pleat that suits kota and handloom cottons; skip it entirely if you prefer mul's softer, lived-in fall.
Cotton as a gift
Cotton is an underrated gift precisely because it gets used. A silk saree often goes into the cupboard for the right occasion; a good cotton one gets worn the same month. If you are buying for someone else, our gifting collection is organised around that idea, and you can also pick in person at our Jayanagar store in Bengaluru — 632/18/3, 10th B Main Rd, 4th T Block East, open Monday to Saturday.
Buying from us
We are factory-direct from Surat and have sold straight to customers since 2017, which is why the price on the tag is not carrying a showroom's rent.
