The short answer: judge a silk saree by seven things — the weave density, the zari quality, the drape, the reverse side, the finishing of edges and pallu, honest photography, and the seller's review record. You don't need lab tests; you need to know where quality shows and where shortcuts hide.
1. Look at the weave density
Hold the fabric toward light. A quality weave is even and close — no loose, gauzy patches in the body. Slubs (tiny natural irregularities) are normal in wild silks like tussar; sparse, uneven weaving is not.
2. Check the zari
Good zari lies flat, shines evenly and doesn't lift at the edges of motifs. Zoom into product photos: real woven zari shows thread texture. Flat, painted-looking "zari" is a print pretending.
3. The reverse side never lies
Woven designs show their threadwork on the back of the fabric; printed designs leave the back plain. In a store, just flip it. Online, look for reverse-side or close-up photos — sellers proud of a weave show it.
4. Feel (or read) the drape
Quality silk falls in soft, rounded folds. Stiff-as-cardboard usually means heavy chemical finishing that washes out. Fabric names tell you what to expect: soft silk drapes easiest, katan holds more body, pure silk weaves sit in between.
5. Edges, pallu and blouse piece
Check that borders run straight and unbroken, the pallu is fully finished (not chopped mid-motif), and a blouse piece is included — every Vastranand saree ships with a 0.80 m unstitched blouse piece.
6. Honest photos beat pretty photos
Multiple angles, close-ups of the weave, and a model shot tell you what arrives. A 10–15% colour difference from screen to hand is normal lighting variance; a completely different saree is not — which is why reputable stores accept damage/wrong-item claims with an unboxing video within 48 hours.
7. Read the review record, not one review
Volume matters more than perfection: thousands of reviews with a high average is a real signal. Vastranand holds 4.9★ across 79,000+ shopper reviews — and because we've made sarees factory-direct in Surat since 2017, the price you pay skips every showroom margin.
