The short answer: pure silk is 100% natural mulberry (or wild) silk — heavier, longer-lived, heirloom-grade and priced accordingly. Soft silk is a lighter silk-blend weave that keeps silk's sheen and rich colour at a fraction of the weight and price. Buy pure silk for ceremonies and keepsakes; buy soft silk for everything you'll actually wear often.
What "pure silk" really means
Pure silk sarees are woven entirely from natural silk yarn — katan (twisted mulberry silk), tussar (wild silk), and the dense weaves behind classic Banarasis and Kanjivarams. Hallmarks: a warm, deep lustre; a dry, substantial hand-feel; the famous rustle; and real weight on the shoulder. Cared for well, a pure silk outlives its owner — which is exactly why bridal and heirloom sarees are pure silk.
What "soft silk" really means
Soft silk blends silk with fine art-silk or viscose yarns, woven to drape immediately — no breaking-in, no stiffness. The sheen is brighter, the weight roughly half, the pleats forgiving even for first-time drapers, and the price accessible enough to own many. It has quietly become India's most-worn festive category: all the occasion-readiness, none of the fatigue.
Five practical differences
- Weight & comfort: soft silk wins an 8-hour function; pure silk wins the photographs of a 2-hour ceremony.
- Longevity: pure silk is the 20-year investment; soft silk is the 3–5-year workhorse.
- Care: pure silk wants dry cleaning and muslin storage; soft silk tolerates gentler home care.
- Price: pure silk weaves at Vastranand run to ₹6,195; most soft silks sit between ₹495 and ₹1,995 — factory-direct in both cases.
- Sheen: pure silk glows; soft silk shines. Neither is wrong — they're different registers.
Which should you buy?
Buy pure silk when it's your wedding, your daughter's wedding, or a saree you intend to hand down. Buy soft silk when it's the festive season calendar — Navratri, Diwali, office celebrations, weddings as a guest — and you want variety without guilt. Most of our million-plus customers own both: two ceremonial pure silks, and a rotating shelf of soft silks.
How to tell them apart when shopping
Read the fabric line honestly stated on the product page (ours name the base: soft silk, katan, tussar, pure viscose dola), check the weight class from the drape in photos and videos, and apply the checks in our guide: How to Identify a Quality Silk Saree.
